On March 7, 2010, the Nam Gion hydropower project was approved by the CDM Executive Board (EB) to register as a CDM project without any modifications. Nam Gion hydropower CDM project, which is consulted by VNEEC, is the largest hydropower project developed and successfully registered by Viet Nam until now.

The Nam Gion hydropower project includes the construction of a 20 MW hydroelectric plant on Nam Gio stream in Nam Gion commune, Muong La district and Chieng On commune, Quynh Nhai district, Son La province.

The purpose of the project is to produce electricity from renewable energy sources (hydropower) to supply to the national grid under a power purchase agreement (PPA) signed with Vietnam Electricity Corporation (EVN). The annual electricity output supplied to the national grid is 80,636 MWh and the total CO2 emission reduction is estimated at 288,092 tCO2 during the first 7 years of crediting period. The project signed an Emission Reduction Contract with ORBEO Corporation.

Unit 1 of the Nam Gion hydropower project was put into operation later this year and the project is expected to start commercial generation on the national grid from September 2011.

The construction and operation of Nam Gion hydropower project will bring positive contributions to the sustainable development in the project area as well as the country and in accordance with the policy of encouraging the exploitation of energy resources. renewable volume of the Government, at the same time contributing to the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions of the world community.

Nam Gion large-scale hydropower CDM project is the third CDM project registered by VNEEC without any modifications, showing the high quality and reliable consultancy capacity of VNEEC.
