In his opening remarks, Mr. Nguyen Van Tuan, Deputy Head of Safety, Environment and Sustainable Development Board, Petrovietnam, emphasized the importance of proactively updating knowledge and building capacity in response to evolving climate policies and carbon market dynamics. This initiative aims not only to fulfill emission management requirements, but also to help units identify early the potential impacts, risks, and economic opportunities associated with carbon in their business and operations.

According to Mr. Tuan, the training program will support the Group and its member units in systematically gaining access to emerging carbon market issues. This approach enables them to formulate strategies tailored to their specific operations, rather than simply fulfilling emission reduction mandates once the market becomes fully operational.

On the first day, VNEEC experts focused on delivering an overview of the carbon market and carbon pricing instruments, while providing updates on the legal framework, development roadmap, and operational mechanisms of Vietnam’s carbon market. The program also delved into highly practical topics for businesses, including quota allocation within the emissions trading system (ETS), carbon credit project development, and carbon asset management. This provided participants with a foundation to discuss the opportunities, challenges, and strategic orientations for Petrovietnam and its subsidiaries when entering the carbon market. Q&A sessions were held throughout the day, enabling participants to engage in direct discussions with VNEEC experts.

On the second day, the program shifted its focus to estimating greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions, highlighting green transition methods suitable for operational activities. In particular, under the close guidance of VNEEC experts, participants gained hands-on experience in estimating GHG emission reductions using calculation tools for typical mitigation measures. This allowed participants to apply their newly acquired knowledge to practical scenarios while receiving direct solutions to technical issues encountered during the exercise.

In his closing remarks, Mr. Nguyen Quang Huy, Head of Environmental Protection Division, Safety, Environment and Sustainable Development Board, Petrovietnam, emphasized that the Group and its member units need to continuously refine GHG inventory activities and build reduction roadmaps tailored to each unit’s specific operational characteristics. This serves as a vital foundation for the Group to proactively prepare for carbon market requirements, ranging from emission management and quota allocation to the effective development and utilization of carbon credits.
