Vietstar Waste Treatment CDM Project enjoys its first CER issuance

On 19 October 2016, an amount of 141,746 CERs has been issued by UNFCCC for the Vietstar municipal solid waste treatment facility in its first crediting period from 06 Jan 2013 to 05 Jan 2016. The project is located within the territory of Tay Bac Solid Waste Treatment Complex Zone, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

 

It involves the pre-sorting, classification of municipal solid waste (MSW); recycling of plastic waste and thermal aerobic treatment of the organic fraction utilizing the LEMNA’s composting technology.

 

The main purpose of the project is to produce aerobic compost from MSW that would have been left to decay anaerobically in waste landfills. In the absence of the project activity, collected municipal waste containing 70.81% organic matter on average would be disposed in dumpsites. The project will reduce methane emissions by establishing and operating facilities to treat organic matter collected from municipal waste. The project will result in the avoidance of a large quantity of methane (CH4) that otherwise would have been released into the atmosphere due to the anaerobic decay of organic waste in landfills. A total expected CO2 equivalent emission reduction is 1,814,924 tCO2e over the fixed 10-year crediting period.

The implementation and operation of Vietstar municipal solid waste treatment project will result in positive contributions toward sustainable development of the region and the country, and be consistent with the government policy which encourages wastes recycling, as well as contribute to reach the target to reduce greenhouse gases set by the international community.
